Recently, a Wigner-Moyal formulation was developed to describe the generalized Hasegawa-Mima equation (Ruiz et al, Phys. Plasmas, 23, 122304 (2016)), which is equivalent to the CE2 formulation (Parker, J. Plasma Phys., 82, 595820602 (2016) ) but has a more intuitive quantum-like form. This formulation can treat drift wave-zonal flow interactions beyond geometric optics limit, and even picks up additional physics within this limit. Currently we are looking at the stability property of zonal flow using this new formulation, namely, the "tertiary instability" as a linear instability, and other nonlinear mechanisms that could destroy the zonal flow.
